I love working with wood – usually it’s for building houses, but I love using it in unusual ways for home décor! This is a great way to use leftover wood from craft projects, or even to use branches from your own backyard and turn them into wood slices.  I’m taking my leftover wood slices of different shapes and sizes and turning them into a clock. Here is how to get started.

You Will Need:

• A variety of wood slices ranging from ½” to 4” in diameter
• A 13” round wood circle, 1/8” thick
• Clock mechanism with large hands
• Drill with bit larger than the clock mechanism shaft
• Hot glue gun and glue sticks
• French cleat
• Tape measure or ruler
• Pencil
• 1” x 2”
• Clear gorilla glue

• Scrapbook paper that looks like wood grain
• Acrylic paint in a variety of colors and water to dilute it.

How-To:

1. Use clear gorilla glue to attach two pieces of 1” x 2” to the back of your 13” wooden round for the clock, one on top and one on bottom. Set aside to let the glue dry.

2. If you want to cover the back with scrapbook paper instead of paint, take your scrapbook paper and cut it to match your wood round.

PRO TIP: Use the wood round as a template.

3. Lay all of your different wood slices out on a surface so that they are all visible.

4. Find the center of the paper circle. Mark the middle with a pencil.

5. Find the largest of your small wood slices to use as the middle of your clock. Match that up with the middle of the wood circle.

6. Use a drill bit that is slightly bigger than the clock mechanism to drill a hole into the wood slice.

7. With hot glue, attach the wood slice in the middle of the circle to your scrapbook paper.

8. After your middle piece is glued down, move on to the outer edge of your circle. Use a variety of wood shapes to create a border. Continue to add wood slices so that the entire paper is covered. Once you like your placement, glue each one down.

9. Continue adding wood slices until the entire circle is covered. This is like putting together a puzzle, you will need to move things around to make sure that they fit well together.

10. To give them a unique look, add watered-down acrylic paint to some of the wood slices. Do this step now so the colors can be scattered around the wood slices evenly. Set aside to dry.

11. Use hot glue to glue the paper with the wood rounds onto the 13” wood circle.

12. Drill through the hole that you made in the small, centered wood round. This will assure that you have an accurate hole to insert your clock mechanism.

13. Take the clock mechanism and put the shaft through the hole in the middle of the circle. Make sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions to put the clock together, since they can vary.

14. Add your French cleat to the top 1” x 2” on the back of your wood circle and attach the other part to the wall.

15. Hang your clock and enjoy!
