DIY Geode Artwork

Paige

Geode Artwork is a very popular decorating choice at the moment, but it can be very expensive! I’ve got an alternative for you… instead of spending hundreds or even thousands on this artwork, make your own for a fraction of the cost! You can make this fit your current decorating, or breathe new life into your old décor! You can make it as small or large as you would like…just depends on your style and your space, along with the geode you would like to display.

Geodes at wholesale will cost you about $20 for a set of four…add a shadow box frame, some hot glue, and you could have a gorgeous piece of artwork for under $30!

You Will Need:

  • Geode slices (as many as you would like to display) I will be using 4 natural-colored geode slices (about 3.5” diameter), 2 purple-colored geode slices (about 3.5” diameter), and 1 blue-colored geode slice (about 5” diameter).
  • Hot glue gun
  • Hot glue sticks
  • Light-colored fabric (I am using a cream-colored cotton/linen blend)
  • Scissors
  • Shadow box (any size you would like to use – I will be using one 8”x8”, one 9”x12” and one 12”x12”)
  • Lint roller (optional)

How To:

  1. Take the back out of the shadow box. This will be your canvas surface for your artwork. Make sure that it is clean and dry. You can use a lint roller to remove any dust or debris.
  2. Take your geodes and make sure they are clean and dry. It is best to use a damp paper towel to remove any smudges. Do not use any cleaning product as I do not know how this will affect the color and finish of the geodes.
  3. If you would like to use a different color background than your shadow box, add your fabric now. Use hot glue to secure the fabric in place. Cut off any access fabric.
  4. Arrange your geode(s) with your matting (if you have matting), and set the geodes in place of where you would like to attach them.
  5. Take your glue gun and place a large bead of glue on the back side of your geode. Immediately place geode in place on your fabric. Hold it to secure it in place and let the glue dry.
  6. Continue this process until all your geodes are set in place.
  7. Add the matting to the glass side of the shadow box. Trim matting if necessary with scissors or a paper cutter.
  8. Add the back side onto the shadow box base and secure into place.
  9. Sit back, relax and enjoy your new geode artwork!
