Everyone knows that I boast we have one of the most creative genius’ on the Home & Family Show who just happens to be our prop master and … the master mind behind ALL of our Halloween DIY’s. This Haunted Horse Cart hit the mark and is the perfect decoration for your front yard this Halloween.
Here is what you need to get started …
- 2 4’ round pieces of ¾”plywood
- 2 12” round pieces of ¾” plywood
- 3 1”x12” boards cut to 6’ length
- 2 2” wood dowel spikes cut to 6’ length
- 4 2” wood dowels cut to 24” length (cut on a slight angle)
- 4 4’ lathing strips
- 16 small wooden buttons
- 4 2”x2” wood pieces cut to 36” length
- 4 8” angle brackets
- Glue gun with glue sticks
- Wood glue
- Screws
- Screw gun
- Jig saw
- Circular saw
- Pencil
- Ruler/Tape measure
- OPTIONAL: Plastic pumpkins, hay, rope, decor
- OPTIONAL: 2 Styrofoam skull heads
- Brown sharpie/paint pen
- Paint (brown, copper)
How-To
1. Take your 4’ plywood rounds and measure 2” in the center of the edge
2. Mark a line across with a ruler
3. With your circular saw, cut off the ends of the boards. This will be the bottom of the wheel structure.
4. Lay out your 3 1”x12” boards on a flat surface and space them about an inch apart.
5. Lay your 4 2”x2”s across the three boards, about 19” apart.
6. Screw in each 2”x2” to the boards
7. Screw in the 2” dowel posts in the first two 2”x2”s (These will serve as the handles of the wagon)
8. Measure 24” up from the bottom of the 4’ rounds, and mark the middle of the board, 10” apart for two of the angle brackets. Secure the bottom side of the angle brackets to the boards with screws.
9. While your structure is still upside down, take your 4 2” dowels and add wood glue to the bottom. Secure them upside down on your structure 2” from each corner with screws.
10. Take your jigsaw and cut out portions of the wood on the edge to give it a weathered look. I did a series of small triangles.
11. Turn your entire structure over. You are done with the hard stuff…now comes the fun and easy stuff!
12. Add the lathing strips to your board with wood glue to look like it is holding together your wheels.
13. Add the wooden buttons across your lathing strips.
14. Take the 12” plywood rounds and attach them to the middle of your wheel with screws.
15. Take your Styrofoam skulls and attach them to the middle of the wheels on top of the rounds.
16. Take paint and make the structure look like it’s weathered. I used brown and copper acrylic paint.
17. Take rope to the top of the 4 posts and wrap it around them to make it look like the top of the wagon.
18. Add any fun items! We added hay and pumpkins, by gluing the pumpkins together to make a giant pumpkin structure.
19. Voila! Enjoy your spooky Halloween Wagon.
