Paige

Want a cute and easy way to decorate your front yard for Halloween? These pillars will make it look like you are a whiz at masonry but they are actually made with some Styrofoam, glue and some paint. You can do this! It’s easy and will make you look like a Halloween pro!

You Will Need:

  • Pink polystyrene insulation (1 1/2″ thick) – one 4×8 ‘ sheet will make four pillars
  • Gorilla glue
  • Spray glue
  • Moss
  • Drywall screws 3”
  • Knife
  • Heat gun
  • Paint grey and black
  • Battery operated pillar candles (you can use any battery operated or corded light fixture inside your jack-0-lantern. Never use an actual flame.).

Mark Steines and Cristina Ferrare welcome actress Lorraine Toussaint from Fox’s “Rosewood.” Actor Ryan McPartlin talks about his movie, “You Cast a Spell on Me.” Debbie Matenopoulos and “Insider” co-host Louis Aguirre review the biggest movies of the fall for your family. Chef Brian Malarky is in our kitchen making croque madam. Nail expert Katie Cazorla shows you spooky nail art for Halloween. Are your child’s grades suffering? Do they also snore? Dr. JJ Levenstein has important information you do not want to miss. Cristina cooks a delicious butternut squash lasagna and grapefruit salad. How To:

  1. Cut your polystyrene in strips that are 6” wide and keep the length at 4 feet.
  2. You will need 4 strips for each pillar. If you use one 4’x8′ sheet, this will give you enough material to make 4 pillars.
  3. Layout the strips so that they fit together to make a 6” x 6” box. The middle of the box will be hollow.
  4. Use gorilla glue to line the edge and attach to another piece.
  5. Add drywall screws to secure the sides together.
  6. Cut the top and the bottom to 12”x12”.
  7. Attach the top with gorilla glue and secure with drywall screws.
  8. Take your knife and use it to cut out pportions to look like stone. You can also take your knife and make marks in the styrafoam to make it look aged.
  9. Take your heating gun and run it over the cuts.
  10. Paint the cuts with black.
  11. Go over the entire structure with grey paint.  We used a dry brush for the detailing but you can also use a roller.
  12. Take spray glue and add it to the structure where you would like to add your moss for decoration.
  13. Take spray glue and moss to the top of the structure as a bed to hold your pumpkin.

If you would like to add a light:

  1. Make a hole in the top and the bottom
  2. Run you light socket through the two holes
  3. If your pumpkin has a hole in the bottom, just place it on top
  4. If not, cut a whole in the bottom of your pumpkin (NOTE: many pumpkins/jack-o-lanterns already have a light in them.  You can just set this on the top of the pillar, plus in or add batteries, and you are good to go!)

XOXO,

Paige
